Gender discrimination in the pay gap still an issue in Michigan

Despite the fact that women in this country have been struggling for equality for over one hundred years, gender discrimination is still an ongoing problem in the American workplace. A study at Western Michigan University revealed the shocking truth that the institute's female professors earned about 4 percent less than the male professors, on average. This study not only reveals the wage inequality at this university, but also it uncovers the truth about the gender discrimination still present across the country in the American workplace today.

President John F. Kennedy signed the Equal Pay Act fifty years ago. Unfortunately, America is still evaluating pay based on gender. Today, the full-time year-round female worker still makes, on average, 77 cents to every dollar male workers in the same position make.

There are supposedly many reasons to explain for the gap. Traditional jobs held by men, such as driving semi-trucks, paid higher than those traditionally held by women, like secretarial work. Male workers also traditionally held more dangerous jobs than women such as logging.

However, these reasons are based on traditional jobs. In the 21st century, women are working in virtually every job category as men. Thanks to the Equal Pay Act, there is no reason for a woman in the same position doing the same amount of work as a man in a similar position should receive lesser wages. If one feels that they are experiencing gender discrimination in their workplace in Michigan, a successfully litigated workplace discrimination lawsuit can compensate one for emotional damages as well as reimburse one for the gender pay gap.
