Employment violations bring $300,000 fine for restaurant owners

When one is running a business, one is typically most concerned with the happiness and satisfaction of one's customers. However, the proper treatment of one's employees should be held in equal regard. One restaurant is learning this important lesson as it currently faces over $300,000 in litigation for employment violations. Though this restaurant is in another state, if Michigan business owners are not careful, employment violations this serious could happen in this state as well.

Apparently, the biggest of the employment violations that this restaurant is facing is that, at times, some of the employees were actually not paid. The owners of the restaurant owe over $150,000 in back wages to servers, and the owners owe another $150,000 in back wages to cooks. These wages include minimum wage as well as overtime violations.

According to the court documents, the two owners have been underpaying or withholding wages from roughly one hundred employees over three years. Part of this problem is the consequence of poor record keeping as to the exact time employees clocked in and out. The owners are also accused of making employees work over 40 hours a week without compensating them more than the regular rate.

Not only do the owners face the $300,000 in back wages, but the Department of Labor is also fining them for other violations. Luckily, the employees of this restaurant reported the owners before the situation got even more outrageous. If a situation were to happen like this in Michigan, the employees could be entitled to legal action against the employment violations, and they could be compensated for any unfair treatment they received.
