2 women fired due to violation of whistleblower protection?

Every American employee has certain employee rights. The right to work in a safe and clean environment is one of these most basic rights. Also, the right to have whistleblower protection when someone has experienced a violation of her rights is part of her employee rights in Michigan as well as in the rest of the country. Two former housekeepers in a medical center have been fired in an act of retaliation for wihstleblowing about their poor working conditions.

The two women's employer formed a contract with another company for housekeeping services, and the women had to use the equipment of the other company. They both received injuries from the new and unsanitary carts, and each employee filed workers' compensation claims. The women's employer allegedly used these claims against them, and the employer supposedly ignored their claims of poor working conditions.

In another instance, there was a sewage flood in the hospital basement, and supervisors ordered the housekeeping crew to clean it up. The women claim that the crew was not given goggles, gloves or proper footwear. One woman brought these issues up at a meeting and was suspended the next day, and the next week she was fired. The other woman was fired later after she felt she was set up for termination after also complaining.

These women are suing their employer for discrimination, retaliation and wrongful termination. They feel that being treated in the way that they detailed violated their employee rights and also violated their right to whistleblower protection. Michigan professionals in employment law are available to provide guidance about appropriate legal actions in circumstances where employee rights appear to have been violated.
