Steakhouse owner faces charges for employment violations

Every American employee has certain employee rights. If those rights are infringed upon, legal action can be taken in Michigan as well as in the rest of the country. A steakhouse owner has recently been arrested for failing to pay his employees, which is the most basic of the employee rights. The owner is facing charges due to his employment violations to his employees' rights.

The steakhouse owner hired several employees at various times during the opening of the restaurant. Supposedly, he did not pay these employees, continuously stating that he would pay them in the future so that they would continue to work for no wages. Employees were hired from October of last year till February, and many quit in April.

The owner has been accused of failing to pay 54 of his employees, including administrative staff, managers, chefs and servers. The amount of wages that he owes his employees totals over $100,000. He faces charges relating to failing to pay his employees such as conspiracy to defraud, and he also faces charges for a fraudulent workers' compensation claim. If he is found guilty of his charges, he faces up to four years in prison.

Depriving employees of their most basic employee right -- the right to get paid -- is illegal in Michigan as well as in the rest of the country, and the owner will be tried for his supposed actions in a court of law. Even though he now faces criminal proceedings, that does not mean that he cannot face civil proceedings as well. His employees who were not paid may elect to file claims against the owner for the employment violations that they have suffered as well as for punitive damages in appropriate cases.
