Michigan woman wins ethnicity discrimination claim

A Michigan woman took a gamble and applied for a position as manager at the casino where she worked. Even though she claims the odds should have been in her favor, she was not chosen for the job. According to her claim filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), she was denied the position based on ethnicity discrimination.

The woman worked for the casino for 10 years and was the beverage supervisor when the manager's position came open. She became the acting manager of the casino during the six months that the position was not filled. She believed that due to this fact, along with her qualifications and experience, that getting the job was a sure thing.

However, the casino's management hired first one then another young, Caucasian woman as manager. Not only had the woman not been given the position, but also she was made to train both women that were later fired by the casino. She claims that the women possessed neither the qualifications nor experience to perform the job, but she does.

Therefore, the woman decided to file a complaint with the EEOC for ethnicity discrimination. Within a month of that filing, the casino terminated her. No one in Michigan should be denied a job or promotion based on his or her ethnicity, gender, age, religious affiliation or any other factor that has nothing to do with a person's ability to perform. As if to illustrate that fact, the woman in this case was awarded some $600,000 because of her claim -- proving that the house does not always win when it comes to illegal discrimination.
