JPMorgan Chase settles $1.45 million in sexual harassment suit

A prominent bank has agreed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission concerning sexual harassment in its company. According to JPMorgan Chase, discrimination that was fueled by sexual harassment and outlined in a lawsuit filed against the company lasted for several years. Although the harassment did not occur at any of its Michigan locations, the settlement that the bank shelled out is still a significant win for victims of sexual harassment across the nation.

According to a lawsuit filed by the EEOC some of their female employees were unable to move forward in their careers due to sexual harassment. Apparently, male supervisors at an Ohio Chase operation were known for creating hostile work environments that included unwanted sexual comments. Female employees, specifically mortgage brokers, who refused to participate in the harassment suffered as a result.

The lawsuit states that the female employees who chose to participate in the sexually driven environment received more training opportunities and sales leads that were better than their female counterparts who did not. After the allegations came to light, the EEOC filed a discrimination lawsuit based on sexual harassment against the bank. Due to the sexually inappropriate work environment that female employees were forced to suffer through, they settled for $1.45 million.

No matter how big or small a company is, an employer has the responsibility of providing a safe and fair working environment for all employees. When discrimination and unfair footing comes into play, Michigan employees who have suffered because of sexual harassment may find that not only have they suffered emotionally, but their careers may have been negatively impacted as well. As demonstrated by the case with JPMorgan, options exist for victims of sexual harassment
