McDonald's may be liable for employment violations

McDonald's -- a popular fast food franchise -- is perhaps most popular for its golden arches and hot fries. Despite its popularity in America and all across the world, some employees say that they are being denied their full wage. Cases from multiple states, including Michigan, have sprung up with employment violations at their base.

Employees expect to be paid for any and all time that they work while at their job. Supposedly, some McDonald's employees were denied overtime pay even though they worked longer than a 40-hour work week. Others claim that they were asked to finish up some of their work while not clocked in. All-in-all the claims seem to all amount to one thing -- lack of pay.

In total, seven lawsuits have been filed, two of which are in Michigan. Some of the suits are filed only against a particular McDonald's franchise while others also include the McDonald's corporation. Those filing against both the franchise and corporation are doing so under what is called vicarious liability, which they hope will also prove to hold the corporation responsible for the workplace violations of its franchise owners.

Losing wages after being forced to work while off of the clock can cause emotional harm on top of financial instability. The Michigan McDonald's employees involved in the lawsuit likely hope to prove that they were treated unfairly, and they believe that the McDonald's corporation should also be responsible for the actions of their franchise owners. In some instances, cases such as this may move forward to a court hearing. Much more likely, McDonald's might offer a flat settlement to the employees who claim that they were the victim of employment violations.
