Weight Watchers settles employment discrimination lawsuit

A company that gained popularity for helping individuals to lose weight was accused of discriminating against a potential employee for the extra weight that she was set to gain during pregnancy. The Michigan applicant, who was pregnant at the time of an interview, claims that she was not offered the position due to her pregnancy. Weight Watchers -- the weight-loss company involved in this claim -- recently agreed to settle the employment discrimination lawsuit that was brought against them for this apparent discrimination.

A 40-year-old mother had experienced great success with Weight Watchers after having her first child. All-in-all, she lost a total of 30 pounds while following the program. After becoming pregnant for a second time, she landed an interview for a part-time job at the weight-loss company. However, she says that they then turned her away as a potential employee, citing the fact that she was pregnant.

The woman proceeded to file a complaint against Weight Watchers and also filed a lawsuit against them for discrimination. The company denied the claims that she was discriminated against because of her pregnancy. Instead, they cite the fact that she was apparently 5 pounds heavier than her goal weight, which is what they say ultimately disqualified her from the job.

The lawsuit was recently settled outside of court and the company shelled out $45,000 to the pregnant woman, who says that she missed out on a job opportunity due to discrimination. Sadly, women can become targets for workplace and employment discrimination simply due to being pregnant. If a Michigan woman feels that she has missed out on work opportunities because of being pregnant, legal recourse against the discriminating company or business might provide financial compensation and an increased awareness of illegal discrimination during the hiring process.
