EEOC update provides protection from pregnancy discrimination

While the Civil Rights Act of 1964 granted equal rights for people despite their gender or race, discrimination persists in the work place in Michigan and elsewhere. Women, in particular, may face hurdles during their course of employment that men do not, such as becoming pregnant. This simple act of starting or continuing a family can garner employment problems or even discrimination, but new federal guidelines seek to combat that.

Man says he suffered retaliation after seeking FMLA leave

A healthcare crisis cannot only take a serious toll on an individual’s personal life, but it can also interfere with their ability to fully function at their job. Fortunately for most, the Family and Medical Leave Act provides some relief to individuals who work for qualifying employers. After a man claimed that he suffered retaliation after his employer violated the FMLA, a federal court that covers various states, including Michigan, agreed with him.

Civil rights violations at Michigan hospital led to settlement

In 2002, a study published by Johns Hopkins University documented that patients strongly prefer doctors that are the same race as themselves. A later study asserted that most African Americans felt that racism existed throughout the healthcare system. Several years after that study was released, an African American nurse experienced civil rights violations occurring at her own Michigan hospital.
