Dealing with discrimination in Michigan

Victims of unlawful discrimination in Michigan have certain rights that have been denied to them entitled to during and after the lawsuit. These rights have been established by the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. Each service is available on a fact sheet so that the victim can read it with an attorney or alone.

The laws in Michigan guarantee civil rights. Discrimination based on protected characteristics is not allowed under any circumstance whether it is in school, on a job or while working with a public service organization. Characteristics that are protected include color, sex, age, ethnicity and criminal background. Those who have been fired or not offered an interview for a job based on protected characteristics have certain rights. A suit can be filed if someone is paid less money at work or has been denied any kind of benefits because of discrimination factors.

In the state of Michigan, all jobs are open to men and women. Schools are not to deny admission to students on the basis of their religion, race, age, marital status or sex. Equal housing opportunities are to be made to everyone in the state. Any complaints can be filed at a health and human service office or the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

When looking at employment discrimination, the victim can seek the help of an attorney to file the proper forms so that a civil suit can begin. The attorney can handle all of the communication with the employer so that the victim does not have to go to court in most situations until the day of trial.
