Supporters rally behind grocery store worker after firing

A Michigan grocery store worker was fired after almost 40 years of employment due to what the store called inappropriate behavior. According to his many supporters, however, the man was fired from Plumb's Valu-Rite Foods in Whitehall for giving hugs to a customer. As of Sept. 5, a Facebook page that was created in support of the worker has accumulated over 8,200 likes.

After receiving criticism about the firing, the grocery store issued a statement explaining how it believed the firing was not a wrongful termination. The statement claims that the store had received multiple complaints from customers, and the worker was on 'final warning status" before his employment was terminated because of an incident.

After losing his job, the man was detained at his home for a charge of misdemeanor assault and battery. A preliminary hearing for the charge was scheduled to take place at Muskegon County District Court on Sept. 16. The man's supporters are reportedly pitching in to pay for his attorney's fees, and they have continued to maintain that any kind of inappropriate behavior is not in the man's character.

A person who believes they have been wrongfully discharged from their job may have a case for filing a lawsuit against their former employer. An attorney might be able to help the plaintiff to build a strong case by gathering a collection of relevant evidence establishing that the firing was unjust. In some cases, character witnesses from coworkers and customers of the establishment may help a worker's case. A verifiable record proving that the worker was in good standing with the company for decades may also help strengthen a wrongful termination lawsuit.
