Pregnancy discrimination in Michigan

Michigan employers are required to follow federal laws, including anti-discrimination laws that are in place to protect pregnant women. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed specifically to address the issues faced by pregnant women in the work force. They are to be treated equally in regards to hiring and firing, pay levels, job assignments, fringe benefits, promotions and other areas, such as scheduled hours and overtime.

In some cases, a woman may be temporarily unable to perform her regular job duties due to the pregnancy, and women require recover time after childbirth. Pregnant women have the same protections as people who are disabled. Under the law, employers must provide them with alternative assignments, unpaid leave, or disability leave in accordance with company policies regarding temporarily disabled workers.

Women in the workplace are protected from discrimination and harassment. Employers, co-workers, and clients or customers are prohibited from creating a hostile work environment. Pregnant women are also protected from being fired or demoted solely because of their pregnancy.

People who believe that their employer is guilty of pregnancy discrimination should learn more about the law and take a closer look at the actions taken by their employer. An attorney can help the individual investigate the claims to determine if discrimination may have taken place. If an individual believes that she was the victim of gender discrimination, then legal action may be taken against the company or the individual involved. An attorney may be able to help clients review the case and determine which parties might be liable for the violations. That attorney may also be able to build a case for compensation that might be presented to the court.
