Understanding MIOSHA standards

Employees in Michigan might be interested in understanding more about the rights and responsibilities given to them by the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration. According to MIOSHA regulations, employers are required to inform employees of obligations or protections provided by MIOSHA, including statutes describing any applicable standards or regulations.

Sexual harassment in Michigan

Despite advances in society and in the law, some employees still are subjected to sexual harassment in the workplace. As a result of such harassment, victims may face negative employment actions or endure hostile work environments. People do not have to continue putting up with such discriminatory behavior, however.

What is disparate impact discrimination?

In Michigan and elsewhere in America, employers are not allowed to engage in disparate discrimination. Disparate discrimination is any policy that does not intentionally discriminate against one particular group, but it has the effect of discriminating against a particular group. For example, the Supreme Court ruled against a company that required job applicants to have a high school diploma.

What is age discrimination in the workplace?

Michigan workers who are over the age of 40 are protected against age discrimination under federal law. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act protects workers who are 40 and older but does not provide protection to those under the age of 40.

What Michigan employees can do about verbal abuse

According to the results of a survey released in 2010, 35 percent of workers reported being bullied on the job. One of the most common forms of bullying reported was verbal abuse. There can be significant consequences to the employer if it is not dealt with properly.
