What Michigan employees can do about verbal abuse

According to the results of a survey released in 2010, 35 percent of workers reported being bullied on the job. One of the most common forms of bullying reported was verbal abuse. There can be significant consequences to the employer if it is not dealt with properly.

Victims and employers alike should look out for those who yell or use rude language toward others in a public setting. Employers should look out for cliques or groups that verbally abuse others at work. In many cases, a verbal abuser will be someone with authority and seniority within the company. While it may be difficult for an employer to get rid of a valuable employee, the employer must take action to provide everyone with a working environment that is free from harassment.

Employees should be given resources at the company level to deal with verbal abuse or any other type of harassment. Managers or others who hear about verbal abuse should take the claims seriously and help those who have been victimized come to a favorable resolution of their problem. Employees who are not helped at the company level may hire an attorney and take legal action against the company for creating a hostile working environment.

Anyone who has suffered mistreatment in the workplace may have a variety of remedies that are available. With the help of an employment law attorney, it may be possible to win compensation in the form of back wages as well as reinstatement. Such an attorney can help a client who has been the target of this type of behavior determine how to proceed.
