Sexual harassment victims are often afraid to speak out at work

Although sexual harassment is a problem in workplaces in Michigan and around the country, the behavior is often not reported by victims due to a fear of retaliation. In many cases, those who harassed feel that they won't be able to apply for other positions if they file a lawsuit. Sometimes, a business will decide to settle the case out of court in an attempt to keep it out of the spotlight, but word will often get out to prospective employers of the victim.

The concept of at-will employment

Many employees in Michigan and around the country are considered 'at-will" employees. Working as an at-will employee means that the employee could be fired at anytime and for almost any reason. An employer who decides to fire an at-will employee does not have to have a good cause for making the decision, and it is not required to provide the employee with any notice that their job is ending.

Michigan hospital merger embroiled in whistleblower lawsuit

A planned merger of the nonprofit Metropolitan Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan with for-profit Community Health Systems has resulted in a former Metropolitan employee launching a lawsuit for wrongful termination and whistleblower violations. According to the woman's lawsuit, she claims to have been fired for reporting that the health system's CEO intended to divert approximately $50 million from the sale of the hospital away from the nonprofit organization.

Preventing sexual harassment by employers in Michigan

According to a recent survey, roughly one-third of all college students say that they have been sexually harassed at work. The actual number may be even higher as younger workers may be hesitant to speak up after being the victim of harassment. In many cases, they feel as if they will be retaliated against or lose their job if they report illegal or inappropriate behavior.
