What rights do I have as a Michigan worker?

Workers in the United States enjoy a wide variety of rights in the workplace. These rights are covered under the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Act, or MIOSHA. The Act outlines employee rights as well as the responsibilities of employers in the state. For example, employers are required to provide their workers with an environment free of hazards and safety risks.

As far as employee rights, they are wide and varied, each one developed to protect Michigan workers regardless of their chosen industries. The section below contains a listing of some of the most important employee rights under MIOSHA.

1.) Your workplace must present no recognized hazards that might cause serious injury or death.

2.) Your employer is required to provide you with protective equipment in certain situations that fall under a MIOSHA standard.

3.) You have the right to request a MIOSHA inspection in writing if you believe your workplace to be in violation of any safety standard.

4.) Further, if you believe an imminent danger exists, you may notify MIOSHA without a written notice.

5.) You have the right to continue working free of any discrimination during and after your participation in a MIOSHA action.

6.) If you do experience discrimination, you have the right to file a complaint with MIOSHA and/or with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory affairs.

This list is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to employee rights in Michigan. As always, you are encouraged to reach out to a legal professional anytime you feel your rights have been violated. One of the best sources of advice can be found at a law firm with experience in employment law.
