Wrongfully terminated? The law is on your side

Many people have been fired from their place of employment at least once in their lives. What surprises many is how emotional the experience can be, not to mention how difficult it is on lifestyles and loved ones. Along with feeling afraid about how they will support their family members, Michigan residents who have been fired often feel a sense of loss. This is particularly true when the termination came out of nowhere and occurred due to no fault of the worker.

Most of the time, the wrongfully terminated worker simply picks up the pieces and carries on with his or her life. However, there are occasions when former employees feel so wronged they decide to fight for their rights. The first thing to understand is that it is good to stand up for yourself in a wrongful termination situation. In fact, it is the right thing to do.

In most work situations, Michigan employment is considered at will. This means employers can terminate any employee on grounds of poor performance or other grounds at their discretion. However, in cases of employment termination that violates a contract between the two parties, the employee may have grounds to file a lawsuit.

Employment law is a vast legal category and most laypeople need help in determining if they have been wrongfully terminated. Legal counsel provided by an attorney can help individuals make this determination while also advising them of the options at their disposal.
