Tips for those who have been wrongfully terminated

If you've been wrongfully terminated in Michigan, your first reaction is probably going to be anger or frustration. You know it wasn't fair and you want to act quickly to either save your job or at least make sure your rights are upheld through a lawsuit. Don't act too quickly, though. First, read these tips, which can help you in the wake of the firing.

1. Don't act negatively and angrily, even though you're justified in feeling that way.2. Find your copy of your employment contract, if you have one.3. Ask your employer to tell you exactly why you have been fired. Get it in writing.4. Make sure you know who specifically decided you needed to be fired.5. Ask for a copy of your personnel file.6. Get together any evidence—like emails and text messages—of what your employer said and did.7. Find out about your severance package options.8. Don't be intimidated just because the person is your former boss. If you were wrongfully fired, the law is on your side, giving you a more powerful position than your boss.9. Give back any company property you may have.10. Go through any normal post-employment procedures.

The key here is to understand that you've been wronged, but to act professionally and responsibly anyway. Don't let any emotions get in the way. Instead, put that energy and emotion into taking the steps listed above so that you can make things right. If you explore your legal options, act in a calm manner, and don't miss any of those steps, things will be resolved in time.
