African American college grads may face discrimination

College graduates don't always have an easy time finding work, no matter what race or ethnicity they happen to be. This comes as a shock to some graduates who have always expected jobs to be waiting for them, but a college degree does not always guarantee a position and a salary.

However, recent studies have shown that things are not always equal for all people in Michigan. These studies suggest that African American college graduates could be facing discrimination when it comes to hiring practices, making it even harder for them to find jobs—even when they have the same degrees and qualifications as white graduates.

In 2013, the unemployment rate for college graduates who were black was 12.4. The overall employment rate for college grads was just 5.6. Clearly, there was a huge gap between the two.

There has almost always been something of a gap. It was quite large back in the late 1980s, but it then closed a lot in the 1990s and early 2000s. However, in the recovery period after the 2008 recession, that gap started to widen again. The rates were almost identical back around the time the recession hit, but the rate of unemployment for black graduates skyrocketed, while the rate for all graduates, while going up, did not increase nearly so drastically.

All people are supposed to have the same chances to land jobs in Michigan, based on education and qualifications, and not based on race. As the stats show, though, this does not always happen, and those who are discriminated against must know what legal options they have.
