Warning signs of potential discrimination

If you think you've been wrongfully terminated from your job in Michigan, it can help to look over a list of reasons that could mean discrimination was the real root cause of the firing. Some of the more common warning signs include the following:

1. Discriminatory comments made by your employer. These could have come in email, on social media, in a phone call, in a text message, in person, or in any other fashion.

2. A common trend when compared to other firings. For example, if you are one of only a few women working at your company and you and the other women are all fired, it could be gender-based discrimination.

3. A firing that happens right after new information comes to light. For instance, perhaps your religion came up on a recent lunch break, and you told your employer what you believed—which he or she hadn't known before. A firing made right after that conversation could be linked to discrimination. However, it's important to note that this is circumstantial evidence.

4. Different treatment outside of the firing. For example, if all people of Hispanic heritage are penalized for things like showing up late for work, while workers of other ethnic backgrounds are not punished, it could show that there was bias even before you were fired.

5. Comments made about preferences in the company. For instance, if your employer notes that he or she wants to hire only recent college graduates and then begins firing older workers, this could indicate that age discrimination is in play.

If you've noticed any of these things, it may be worth looking into them further and learning more about your legal rights.
