Discrimination could strike before an interview

When you sit down for an interview, you could instantly get the feeling that discrimination is in play. It could be as simple as the way you feel about interactions with the potential employer, or remarks made about your resume could tip you off. However, it's important to know that discrimination could strike even before you get that interview.

For example, one woman said that she went to a recruiting company to get a new job. The company reached out to a potential employer, who liked her resume, but who apparently did not know her age. The employer then went on social media to look her up, found out how old she was and said she was too old to get the job.

Instantly, the woman felt that this was discrimination, but the employer disagreed. They said that it didn't count as such because she'd never been brought in for an interview. She still disagreed with that stance, but it put her in a tough position. She'd never met the employer, after all. She'd never been to the company. She'd never been in for an interview. The employer had actually said she was too "long in the tooth" to take the position, so she hadn't been directly denied because of her age. The company could weakly argue they meant something else entirely.

While situations like this may be complex, it's important to know what legal rights you have to start a lawsuit when you're discriminated against in any way. Age discrimination is just as illegal as racial discrimination or any other type in Michigan, and it should not be ignored.
