Examples of verbal sexual harassment

A lot of sexual harassment in the workplace never gets to the physical stage. However, it's important to remember that you don't have to be touched or physically contacted to be harassed. Your rights very well could have been violated just by things that are said to you and around you. Some examples include the following:

-- Using sexually-based pet names. For example, if your boss always calls you a babe or calls you honey, that could be harassment.

-- Using sexual innuendos. Some people think that by not directly saying something explicit, they can get around the laws, but it doesn't work that way. Even things that are not explicit could be meant sexually, when there is an obvious implied meaning.

-- Bringing up a person's sexual past or current sex life. If a question feels very inappropriate when it's asked, it probably is.

-- Making comments regarding the way you look or talking openly about your body. Some people think they are just being flattering, but it could very well be crude and invasive.

-- Asking you out too many times. Being asked out once isn't an offense, but too much persistence can be considered harassment if you've made it clear you don't want to go out with the person.

-- Making sexual jokes. Many jokes are crude, and they may have their place in society -- such as in a comedy club -- but that does not mean it's all right to tell them at the office.

If you've been verbally harassed, it's wise to look into your legal options in Michigan, especially since taking action now could keep it from ever turning physical.
