Lake Michigan College president sues for wrongful termination

The president of Lake Michigan College was in office for under 90 days when she was fired from the post. Now she is suing for wrongful termination, saying that the college had no reason to fire her.

According to the board of trustees, the former president spent about $20,000 that she wasn't supposed to during her short tenure. They claim it went to her office renovations, the cost of her inauguration ceremony and some trips that she took that weren't related to the college, among other things.

The former president, though, says that she was actually looking into what the school was doing with financial aid, and she found out that regulations were being broken. She says she found that the school wasn't complying with some federal laws.

She also said that she had reasons to spend the money that she did. For one thing, she thought that the board would see the travel expenses before they went to the finance team, and they then could have considered approving them. Instead, they went right to the finance team.

Additionally, she says that ceremony was actually set up by another staff member, not by her. She claims that she even decided to pay for some of the expenses herself, by deducting money from her paychecks, when she found out what was being spent. Finally, she said she was not told she needed any permission for changes to her office.

This is a case that is growing more complex as more details emerge. It certainly shows how important it is for workers who have signed contracts to know how and why they can be fired, and also to know what legal options they have if they believed they've been fired illegally.
