Study finds that attractive people make more money

Two studies found that it is absolutely beneficial to be attractive in the modern workplace, as those who are tend to make more money. The first study looked at people who worked for 40 years and determined that someone whose looks were below-average would make $1.46 million in that time. On the other hand, a person who was considered to be above-average looking would make $1.69 million. That's a big difference just for being attractive.

The second study backed this up. It looked at workers in both the United States and Canada. What it found was that those who were considered unattractive earned 12 to 14 percent less than those who were attractive. Of course, there are outliers to every study, but this shows the general trends.

Some researchers have studied this effect and found a few different reasons why it may happen. For one thing, those who are physically attractive tend to have a higher level of confidence, which can breed better social skills, starting when they're still kids. These social skills have actually been shown to impact a person's earning potential more than intelligence.

Another thing they found was that people who note a good characteristic in a person tend to simply assume that person has other good characteristics. For example, a boss may assume that an attractive worker is also smarter and more productive than an unattractive worker.

Of course, discrimination in the workplace is illegal, and judging someone's relative "attractiveness" could come back to other issues, such as race, age, or gender. Those who have been discriminated against may have legal options they can pursue in Michigan.
