Do you understand your whistleblower rights?

Do you have reason to believe that an employee is engaging in some form of illegal activity? Is this person benefiting from the activity?

If you find wrongdoing without your company, it may be time to stand up and notify the property authorities. While you know this is the right thing to do, you also may realize that others will not be happy about this approach.

As a whistleblower, you should feel a sense of pride that you did the right thing. Unfortunately, depending on the circumstances, it's possible that speaking out could lead to negative consequences, which could be as serious as losing your job.

Conversely, it's important to know that there are both state and federal laws in place to protect whistleblowers. For this reason, you should never feel that you are unable to speak out against some type of wrongdoing.

Life as a whistleblower can be lonely. Even so, you should always remember this: you did the right thing, and you should be rewarded as opposed to punished. If you have been retaliated against in any way, such as by demotion or termination, make sure you understand and protect your rights.

At our law firm, we have worked closely with many whistleblowers over the years to ensure that they are treated fairly. From wrongful termination to all other issues regarding employment law, we are there to provide guidance and advice.

If you find yourself blowing the whistle on your company, keep one thing in mind: you have legal rights, and they need to be protected at all costs.
