Facebook facing discrimination lawsuit

As an employee of a company, you have a right to work in an environment that doesn't discriminate against you based on race, religion, age, national origin, gender or disability. This can include things like being passed up for a promotion, being fired or having to endure inappropriate comments at work. When workplace discrimination happens, it can cost the victim both emotionally and monetarily.

This form of injustice can happen at small companies and large ones, as a recent news story points out. Social media giant Facebook is being accused of racial discrimination at one of its data centers. Two African-American employees claim that a facility manager at Facebook referred to black employees using racial slurs and when the behavior was reported, Facebook retaliated against the employees reporting it. The two former employees also stated that white employees were paid more.

Facebook fired the manager in question, but the employees involved in the suit claim that the situation went on for more than three years. The plaintiffs are each asking for over $25,000 in damages.

A story like this one demonstrates that workplace discrimination can happen anywhere. If it does happen to you, it's important to know that you have rights. You can't be discriminated against based on several factors, and you can't be retaliated against for having the bravery to come forward. If you feel you've experienced discrimination at your job, it might be a good idea to speak with an attorney. He or she can look into your situation and may be able to get you compensation.
