Michigan corrections officer files discrimination lawsuit

Having a job in the United States entitles you to certain rights. One of those rights is to a work environment that's free from discrimination. You can't be fired, retaliated against or passed up for a promotion based on your religion, sex, age or the color of your skin.

One Michigan corrections officer is alleging that his rights were violated by the Michigan Department of Corrections and he's filed a lawsuit because of it. The officer, who's been in corrections for nearly 20 years, claims the retaliation started when he spoke out about a superior who'd made a spoof training video and posted it online. He says that the superior falsely disciplined him for whistleblowing.

He also cites another incident where several African American officers arrived at the firing range for certification but were denied, while white officers were given entry immediately. The lawsuit alleges a system-wide policy of discrimination and points to an internal MDOC memo that shows black officers are disciplined four times as much as white officers.

At the time of the filing, the MDOC declined to make a comment regarding the alleged discrimination.

A case like this one shows that discrimination can happen anywhere, from small business to government institutions. If you feel you've been discriminated against for your race, sex, age or religion, you might want to consider bringing your story to an attorney who specializes in workplace discrimination. He or she will listen to the details of your situation and may be able to help you file a suit.
