Michigan woman sues for wrongful termination

There are times when an employer lets go of an employee for legitimate reasons. In fact, Michigan is an "at-will" state, meaning you can be fired without giving a reason. However, there is an exception to that rule: when it happens as a retaliation, the employee has a right to take action against the employer.

A Michigan woman did just that, alleging that she was fired for investigating her employer for embezzlement. The woman was given the position of utility finance controller at the Board of Public Utilities and was investigating the director and former finance director of the organization. She claims two of them used $10 million dollars for their own purposes.

No official charges have been brought forth against the directors in question, though the contract of one of the people was not renewed in 2015. Some months later, the new director of the Board of Public Utilities took the employee in question out to dinner, where he talked about taking his family on trips using the city's credit card.

The woman is using the Michigan Whistleblowers' Protection Act, a law that protects employees from employer retaliation. In the lawsuit, she is seeking her retirement benefits, plus punitive and compensatory damages.

If you feel you have been dismissed from your job in an illegal manner, it may be wise to speak to an attorney. A lawyer with experience in employee rights will be able to look at the situation and may be able to help you file a suit to recover compensation.
