Whistleblowers have protection

As a whistleblower, it's important to realize one thing to be true: You did the right thing.

Unfortunately, this can often lead to a situation in which you are retaliated against by your employer.

When you report a violation of the law by your company, you think you are doing the right thing and that you will be praised. But what actually happens is this: your employer becomes angry, thus taking steps to make your life miserable.

The good thing is that you have legal rights. There are both federal and state whistleblower laws that are meant to provide you with protection. With these laws in place, you can speak out, if need be, without any concern of being retaliated against.

Some of the federal laws that have protections for whistleblowers include: Compensation and Liability Act, Comprehensive Environmental Response, and the Clean Air Act.

Along with the above, it's always important to remember that your state may have its own set of whistleblower protections. Just the same as federal laws, you will receive protection on the state level as long as you had good reason to believe that your employer or another employee was violating the law in some form.

It takes a special kind of person to stand up and speak out against wrongdoing. As a whistleblower, even if you did the right thing from your point of view, your employer may become angry.

In the event that your employer retaliates, such as by demoting you or terminating your employment, you need to learn more about your legal rights and then take the appropriate action.
