Workplace discrimination is, sadly, a common thing

On Behalf of | Apr 4, 2017 | Workplace Discrimination

Discrimination in any of its form is unacceptable. Unfortunately, numerous Michigan residents are exposed to various types of discrimination in their places of employment on a frequent basis. Just because workplace discrimination seems to be a common or even normal thing does not make it right. In fact, those who are victims of such behavior may have legal recourse.

The results of study about workplace discrimination, conducted by VitalSmarts, was recently released. In total, 500 people were interviewed. Of all those people, 49 percent claim that they experience discrimination while at work on a regular basis. Of those who claim to be victims of employment discrimination, 66 percent say it has a direct effect on their overall performance. The types of discrimination reported included race, gender, age, religion, disability and medical conditions — among various others.

Why do so many experience workplace discrimination on a frequent basis? The truth is that most people are not sure how to address the situation. Approximately 60 percent of those surveyed for this study say that they do not know how to best handle the situation or how to make it stop. Of course, if discrimination goes unreported, nothing can be done.

Workplace discrimination can make going to work a horrible experience. It should not be this way. Michigan residents who are experiencing any form of discrimination while at work can take action, first by informing their employers and second by filing legal claims if the problem is not appropriately addressed. An experienced attorney can assist victims of workplace discrimination in holding their employers accountable and in seeking full and fair compensation for their losses.
