Samuel R. Simkins

Sam's practice at Akeel & Valentine focuses on the fraud side of our mission: prosecuting hate and fraud. This often involves representing whistleblowers who take the brave step of coming forward to expose corporate fraud. There are endless ways in which greed drives these powerful corporations to defraud the American people and the government directly. Sam is most active in rooting out fraud in the insurance and pharmaceutical industries, but he is well-positioned to prosecute complex fraud wherever it rears its head. Sam's cases often involve violations of the False Claims Act (i.e. when the government itself is defrauded), the Medicare Secondary Payer Act, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act ("RICO"), or the Anti-Kickback Statute.

Before joining Akeel & Valentine, Sam prosecuted a different kind of abuse. As an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan, Sam prosecuted more than a hundred child abuse cases-including dozens of full trials. This experience is complemented by Sam's time as a litigation attorney at a large corporate defense firm. Seeing first-hand how defense firms operate has given Sam a strategic edge that is relevant in every case.

Sam graduated from Wayne State University Law School in the top 10% of his class and earned several "scholar awards." Sam lives in Detroit with his wife, kids, and their pet snake, Bob. When not serving the community as an attorney, Sam can likely be found hiking with his family, woodworking in his basement, or enjoying a cup of coffee and a good book.
