Building A Family Should Not Be Held Against You
Pregnancy, planned or unplanned, is a fact of life. It happens, and your choices in regard to your pregnancy deserve respect and should not impact your job. Employers, looking only at the bottom lines, often see pregnancy as a negative and act accordingly.
At Akeel & Valentine, PLC, our lawyers fight pregnancy discrimination on behalf of people in Detroit and across Michigan. We’re a national practice and will represent people across the nation if necessary. We pursue justice for and with you, protecting you from companies that see your pregnancy as a problem.
You Must Recognize Pregnancy Discrimination At Work When It Happens
Pregnancy discrimination is related in many ways to both sex discrimination and gender discrimination. In pregnancy discrimination, your employers’ motives may not be immediately scrutable upon working. However, once a person becomes pregnant, they may see significant changes in their employment:
- A loss of preferred assignments
- More scrutiny to work product
- Increased efforts at discipline
- Resistance to requests for time off
Some employers tend to see pregnancy as a productivity albatross and react accordingly. They look at you – no longer as the productive, competent worker you are and have proven to be – as another problem to resolve.
You Have Rights To Spend Time With Your Child And Expand Your Family
Under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), you have the right to unpaid leave when you have a child. Furthermore, your employer cannot remove you or terminate your employment based on taking this leave or having a pregnancy.
While these are clear in the law, lots of employers play fast and loose with the rules and try to remove all their pregnant employees as soon as they can.
